Sports betting is a popular activity all around the world. It is estimated that there is a value of over EUR100 billion every year. There are several markets for bets in horse racing, tennis, football, boxing and many more. In the United Kingdom, the horse betting market is the largest in the world.
However, sports betting is not regulated in all markets. Hence, it is important to understand the rules before placing a bet. The following are some of the common rules that are commonly applied in sports betting. These are also referred to as the Specific Sports Betting Rules.
For instance, bets on a player who does not start a match will not be settled. A bet on a team who does not finish a match will also be considered non-starter. Also, if a player withdraws from a game, the bet will be refunded.
A match with a Dead Heat rule will be considered an even score. This means that a bet on the winner will be settled on the final score, at the end of the match. If there is a penalty, the penalty will not count towards the final score. On the other hand, if there is no penalty, the bet is considered even.
Bets on the total goal are calculated based on the number of goals scored and the total number of points won by the teams in the game. A bet on the total goal will be refunded if the final score of the game is 0-0. To qualify for this bet, the total score of a match must be at least equal to the total score of the 1st half of the same match. Moreover, bets on the result of a game with a penalty shootout are void.
Period betting is an option that is only available to bets that take place on the regular time of a game. The time period is a set duration, excluding extra time and stoppages. You can choose whether you want your bet to be settled on the final score at the end of the regulation time of the game, or on the total points accumulated by the teams in the game.
In Running (“Live”) bets are only available for matches marked as “live”. They are only valid until the Operator has ceased betting on the event. Upon the Operator’s cessation of betting, all bets placed on the event will be refunded. Similarly, if the event is abandoned before the start of the penalty, all pending bets will be refunded.
There are special betting rules that apply to each sport. One such rule is the Total Number of Bookings rule. As long as a specific number of bookings is reached, a bet is eligible.
Bets on the outcome of two paired competitors are considered money line bets. This is a type of bet that requires you to predict the exact result of the match. When you make a bet on a match with a money line, you will be refunded if you lose.
